Period Living

Every season

- Melanie Griffiths Editor, Period Living

has its own unique beauty, but spring is the most glorious of all. As winter’s bleakness finally surrenders to the sun, and flora and fauna begin to reawaken, I too am renewed with a fresh sense of optimism and desire to experience new things. This month, I can’t wait to try my hand at the stunning wreath project on our front cover, created exclusively for Period Living by the super-talented Emma Hutchinson of The Bespoke Flower Company (page 86). It’s the perfect piece to welcome friends and family to an Easter celebration. To further get into the spirit of the season, this month we reveal how to choose and grow crops for your own vegetable garden (page 142). You simply can’t beat the flavour – and satisfaction – of home-grown produce, and with news reports that Brexit may increase food prices, now is the ideal time to reduce your reliance on shop-bought goods. Last year, I made tentative steps towards creating my own kitchen garden – with mixed success – and this year will be investing in more containers for the patio to maximise every inch. If you’re doing your best to emulate The Good Life, then get in touch via social media – we’d love to find out what you’re growing. Elsewhere this issue, Antiques Roadshow expert Marc Allum celebrates the life and work of the man whose name is synonymous with the British ceramics industry – Josiah Wedgwood – and provides advice on investing in his designs (page 94). From his headquarters in industrial powerhouse Stoke-on-trent, Wedgwood created pieces that graced the dinner tables and sideboards of royalty and nobility in the 18th century and beyond, and produced innovations that forever changed the face of the ceramics industry. It’s a fascinating read. Finally, this month don’t miss the chance to subscribe to Period Living for just £20.50 for six issues, and receive a gorgeous Emma Bridgewater cake tin set worth £38 (page 92). Enjoy!
