Choosing the mattress
Jeff Cohen, manager of And so to Bed’s London showroom, provides expert advice on replacing your mattress and finding the right fit
QWhen should I replace my mattress? The standard recommendation is to replace your mattress every eight to ten years, but a premium mattress will often last a lot longer than this. However, we would still recommend replacing your mattress when the comfort and support it offers is no longer at its best.
QHow do I know which mattress is right for me? With so much choice available, shopping for the right mattress can be a minefield with different styles, materials and density. The perfect mattress will differ from person to person but it should be supportive and comfortable when you lie in your normal sleeping position.
QWhat’s your top tip for buying a new mattress? Since each mattress will adapt to a each person differently, we always recommend trying before you buy. Make sure the store follows government guidelines on social distancing and hygiene measures. Our sleep experts are more than happy to help identify the right mattress for you.
QCan you explain the difference between a spring and a foam mattress?
Spring-based mattresses usually consist of naturally sourced fillings, while foam is a synthetic product. Both will provide a different level of comfort and support depending on what you are after. Naturally sourced products are considered more friendly to the environment.
QShould I buy a soft, medium or firm mattress? The tension of the mattress can always vary depending on whether you prefer that sinking feeling or would like better movement on your mattress. For a bespoke approach, try Vispring, which bases the tension on body weight to provide optimum comfort and support.
