Bedding down for spring

- Mick Lavelle is senior lecturer in horticulture at Writtle University College*

As the chill starts to set in during October, the once dazzling summer bedding displays begin to fade. It is now time to start preparations for spring, and spring bedding plants are one of the easiest ways to add some early cheer to the garden.

Once the summer plants are cleared, start by raking the soil level, and remove any clods or stones. It is vital to level the ground before planting, as an even surface will make the display infinitely better.

For most winter bedding you will need around 10 plants per m2 for a good display. If you are planning a pattern, or geometric design, mark this out on the level surface using fine sand. Make sure that the plants have been thoroughly watered and allowed to drain at least an hour before you start the planting. Gently loosen plants from their trays or pots while keeping your hand over the compost surface. Handle plants by their root-ball to avoid damaging them; avoid holding them by the stems. Before you plant any, lay them all out on the soil where you want them so you can space them properly to fill the area. Use the length of a trowel blade to space plants evenly. Only plant them once you are completely satisfied with their positioning.

Plant making a hole with a hand trowel, so the top of the root-ball is just below the soil surface, and re-firm the soil around the plant. Water once they are all planted. Spring bedding rarely needs frequent watering but water them regularly in their first month if the weather is unusually dry, to aid establishment.
