Whether you’re looking to make a significant investment or simply adore classic children’s books, the Children’s Books and Original Artwork catalogue from Peter Harrington will undoubtedly interest you. Featuring 141 items, of which 54 pieces are original artwork, this curated selection presents work from some of the greatest and best-loved illustrators including Quentin Blake, Edward Lear, Beatrix Potter, Arthur Rackham, E. H. Shepard and Louis Wain.
‘Included within this selection are specific works of huge importance: two original ink drawings by Shepard, published in Winnie-the-pooh, an exquisite watercolour by Rackham from his edition of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Beatrix Potter’s recreation of the frontispiece for Peter Rabbit,’ says Dr Philip W. Errington, senior specialist at Peter Harrington. ‘It’s rare for several such exceptional pieces to come on the market at the same time.’
Many of the illustrators whose works are included in the collection hark back to the early 20th century – considered the Golden Age of Illustration. It is likely that the pieces will largely be bought privately. ‘Many of the pieces are so evocative of specific eras that they would beautifully complement a home interior,’ says Philip.
‘The illustration of Alice is one of the most spectacular I’ve seen. The piece has drama and movement: you see it in the wide eyes of Alice and the positioning of her hands as she fends off an attack by a pack of playing cards. (peterharrington.co.uk)
