Wonderful day for royal medal pair

Charity work and science research recognised

A Fair City fundraiser and a community-spirited Coupar Angus woman have been honoured by the Queen.

June Craig’s charitable efforts and Sheena Lamond’s work at the James Hutton Institute saw them both given the British Empire Medal, which they were officially presented with at a ceremony in Perth this week.

Friends and family of both women were at the city’s new Civic Hall in the council headquarte­rs with the honours handed out by Lord Lieutenant of Perth and Kinross Brigadier Melville Jameson CBE with Provost Liz Grant also attending.

June, from Craigie, was recognised her hands-on service in the local community, raising thousands of pounds for good causes.

And Sheena Lamond has been presented with a British Empire Medal for her services to agricultur­al science.

Ms Lamond was recognised for her work at the James Hutton Institute, a world-leading research facility in crops, soil and land use, and environmen­tal research, where she has been for 46 years.

She said: “I am absolutely gobsmacked, but it has been really, really lovely. The highlight has been seeing the way the institute has grown, and we are now world leaders.

“The work we do at the James Hutton Institute is vital to the many farmers and growers in this area, so it is hugely important to be recognised with a British Empire Medal.”

Sheena was joined on the day by her cousin, who surprised her by coming up for the ceremony from Devon. She said: “It was so nice to see them and for them to come up and surprise me today.”
