Common Good Fund splashes the cash

Cllr Willie Wilson helped to conclude the Common Good Fund gathering A number of organisati­ons across Perth have benefited from the Perth Common Good Fund this month.

At the meeting of Perth and Kinross Council’s Perth Common Good Fund Committee on Wednesda this week, 10 separate applicatio­ns were given financial assistance.

A young person from Perth has been awarded £400 towards the costs of a yearlong volunteeri­ng trip to South Africa.

The person will need to raise a total of £6,200 to volunteer with the Project Trust in an orphanage.

Tulloch Primary School’s Parent Council were awarded a grant of £700 to cover the costs of their summer trips, including to MacRosty Park in Crieff, the South Inch, and Perth Cinema.

This is the third time Tulloch Parent Council have benefited from a £700 grant from the Perth Common Good Fund.

Five pupils at Perth Grammar School have each been awarded £300 so they can join their classmates on a school trip to Madrid, Spain, in June.

Jeanfield Swifts 2003 FC have been awarded £600 to allow them to attend the Costa Daurada Cup, and internatio­nal football tournament in Spain, between June 27 and July 1.

The applicant initially asked for £6,000 to cover the 16 players and four coaches, however have only been granted £600 as this is the maximum allowed from the Common Good Fund for sports groups of less than 20 people.

St John’s Academy has been granted £500 towards producing Grease the musical in June.

St John’s Academy has previously benefited from the Perth Common Good Fund with £2,850 in 2014/15, £1,500 in 2015/16 and £1,000 for 2016/17.

Perth Common Good Fund then retrospect­ively agreed for the Scottish Chamber Orchestra to receive £3,150 towards two concerts that took place in February and March 2017.

Initially, the orchestra submitted a bid for £9,500, but were only granted £3,150 as music concerts can only receive up to 40% of the total costs from the Common Good Fund, and the orchestra has benefitted from two previous grants of £9,500.

The City of Perth Early Education Centre Parent Council has been awarded £525 to take a nursery class from Fairfield to the Auchingarr­ich Wildlife Centre in Comrie on Friday, April 28.

The parent council had initially asked for £650, but it was recommende­d to award the lower amount, as the common good fund can only cover 50% of the total amount for trips of this sort.

The Wednesday Tea Dance were given £175 to cover the costs of their summer outing to Dumfries in August.

The 25 members had applied for £225, but were only given £175 as again, only 50 per cent of the total costs can be awarded for trips.

Kinnoull Juniors FC were given £2,500 to cover the costs of the Perth World Cup tournament in June.

This will go towards 16 teams from ethnic minority communitie­s competing in a friendly tournament in Tulloch Park.

Finally, the JD Fergusson Arts Awards Trust were given a grant of £1,900 towards covering the costs of a travel award.

The trust will give an artist the opportunit­y to travel and experience different cultures in order for them to present an exhibition at the art gallery.

This is the last meeting of the Perth Common Good Fund for this council administra­tion.

At the end of the meeting in the Council Chambers, Cllr Willie Wilson wished the committee’s convener, Cllr Alistair Munro, good luck.
