Perthshire are crowned champions

-

Perthshire men’s first team have been crowned National Division 3 champions after a comprehensive 6-1 victory against Erskine Stewarts Melville.

The Fair City squad headed into the fixture knowing that a win or draw would be good enough to lift the trophy.

And they started the game with real intent, netting from open play in the first couple of minutes of the game. Two further goals were added before half-time.

Shire continued in the same vein in the second half to score another two goals in quick succession.

Despite a penalty miss and a consolation goal from ESM, Perth added a further goal to seal the win and the title.

Goalscorers: M Czub, M Robertson (2), N Robertson (2) and M White.

This win was Perthshire’s 10th league win in a row having played 16, won 13, drawn two and lost one.

Meanwhile, the men’s second team battled to a 3-3 draw with St Andrews University men’s second squad.

The students were first to get their name on the scoresheet but Wilkie soon had Shire back in the contest. It was an exciting watch for spectators and, despite St Andrews netting two goals in quick succession, a late brace from Fleming levelled the game.

Perthshire ladies’first team added to a positive week of action by recording a solid 4-0 triumph over the University of Strathclyde women’s first team.

Despite losing their last meet against the Glasgow side, Shire headed into the game with optimism and a strong squad.

Martin got the ball rolling for Perth with a neat goal in the early stages before Flett bagged a second after a continued spell of pressure. There was no complacency after the break and, from a well worked corner, Cockburn was on hand to deflect a Flett strike on target and past the keeper.

The final goal of the game came from open play and it was again Martin who showed a great deal of composure to tuck into the net. *Weekend fixture: Perthshire ladies 2nd XI play Blairgowrie at Kilgraston in the Midlands Knockout Cup Final.
