Stylists can get cut of profits
Chair rental option open at Vanilla
A long-serving Perth businessman is preparing to hang up his styling accessories for the last time – but he hopes that the next generation will be able to step in.
Denis Reilly of Vanilla Hair and Beauty has been at the cutting edge since the 1960s and is seeking to ease himself away from the day to day trims and treatments.
However, he wants to retain the popular Scott Street business in the background, with stylists and specialists meeting their clientele in the premises.
In turn they will pay rent – known as rent a chair in the business – with the backing of the long-established firm helping them to keep costs down.
Mr Reilly explained: “With so many businesses in Perth closing down I think this is a good news story – Vanilla will still be here but I will no longer be working at the chair.
“It’s a chance for hairdressers and stylists with a client list to set up but without some of the costs involved of going into business, but they are effectively still self-employed.
“That can be a big part for people and the rent a chair idea allows them to keep more of their hard-earned money. The girls at Vanilla can work long hours to suit their clients but it comes with a good team ethic and they are well supported.”
Denis started out in the industry after leaving school. He set up in George Street and worked alongside wife Marion who has retired. The Scott Street premises grew, spreading into three units and he invested heavily for the rebrand to Vanilla.
Looking back at his career he said: “I still enjoy being involved but I also want to be able to help out others.
“I am lucky that after 57 years I can say I have only ever had one job – that’s got to be unusual in this day and age – but the time is right for me to step back a little.”
He says his aim is to spend more time with friends and family.
