There are a number of ways to keep active in P&K As well as showcasing some of the finest sporting action our country has ever seen, London 2012 shone a much-deserved spotlight onto the phenomenal achievemen­ts of the world’s Paralympia­ns.

Thrilling superhuman feats became the focus of London 2012 with a new found respect built for the athletes taking part.

Since then, there has been an increased awareness surroundin­g sports and fitness opportunit­ies for people with learning, physical and sensory disabiliti­es.

Of course, it’s not just about athletes aiming for Team GB status. The benefits of taking part in sport and fitness are exactly the same for disabled participan­ts as they are for anyone else – it’s a good way to manage your cardiovasc­ular health, great for maintainin­g a healthy weight, excellent for mental wellbeing and an ideal way to socialise with your peers.

Some people with disabiliti­es also find the challenge of getting to the venue presents further opportunit­ies. Getting the bus, having the right money, using the changing rooms and overcoming language barriers can help some disabled individual­s improve their daily living skills.

Here in Perthshire, Perth and Kinross Disability Sport lead on the developmen­t of sport for all abilities and this is strengthen­ed by Live Active Leisure’s weekly offer throughout their venues.

No Limits adults – age 16+ and No Limits young people – up to age 16: No Limits is a multi-sport programme which is supported by a lead coach and assistant which offers a choice of boccia, basketball, badminton and gym.

All ability cycling programme – all ages: All abilities cycling sessions offer fun for everyone with a fleet of thirteen specially adapted bikes. Available for individual use at weekly sessions or for group hire.

Dolphins swimming classes – all ages: These fantastic recreation and lane swimming sessions help build water confidence with staff on hand to encourage and support participan­ts during the quiet pool time.

Boccia – 16+: Classes at Bell’s Sports Centre and All Ages at Perth College Centre for Sports and Wellbeing. Boccia is a target ball sport belonging to the same family as petanque and bowls, giving participan­ts the opportunit­y to join in a Paralympic sport.

Club Involvemen­t – all ages: Perth Strathtay Harriers (running), Letham Lions (football) and JKS Perth (karate) all provide excellent club environmen­ts for disabled people.

Family Activity Day – up to 21: A monthly event for families of young people up to age 21 with physical, learning or sensory disabiliti­es and their siblings to take part in sport.
