Victories for Perth sides in Open contest

Perth teams performed with prestige at the 31st Scottish Open Volleyball tournament.

The event was staged on the Fair City’s North Inch and welcomed players from as far as Belgium, Faroe Islands, Canada, France, Russia, Holland and Ecuador.

And in men’s Division One Sunderland Men were crowned champions after edging out Killie Legends 25-21, 25-17. The women’s Division One was won by Livingston Rainbows.

Perth success was just around the corner and Rab Murdoch’s Dodgy Spikers, the Perth Premier League champions, lifted the Scottish Open title.

They defeated Tynedale from North East England in the final by a close two sets to one.

Greg Marshall’s Perth side The Renegades secured victory in the Mixed Division Three, while the consolatio­n trophy for this division went to Susan Scott’s Plus Perth Mental Health.

Elsewhere, Dunfermlin­e Phoenix, Perth Recreation­al League champions, won the Men’s Division Three trophy, coming from behind to defeat Drinks’ Team from Aberdeen.

Mixed Division One witnessed Edinburgh based side Desperados take the title, with the Mixed Division Two going to The Pandas, also from the capital.

Tournament director David Munro said:“The small volunteer committee deserve massive congratula­tions for, once again, proving how much Perth’s natural amenities can be utilised for internatio­nal sporting events.

“The Scottish Open Volleyball Tournament is surely now well establishe­d as‘the best fun volleyball you can get tournament’in the whole of the UK.”
