Getting a shot at top golf tuition

- Staff Reporter

Residents at Kincarrathie House care home in Perth are getting some of the best golfing tips around thanks to Ian Marchbank.

Mr Marchbank is a resident at the Pitcullen Crescent home and staff there were keen to tap into his expertise from a fascinating life in the sport spent at Gleneagles and Turnberry.

He struck up conversations with the gardeners at the care home which inspired staff to see if he could put his skills to continued good use.

Other residents are now offered the chance for some gentle but nonetheless top tips on pitching and chipping.

The care home has set aside part of the garden grounds so that Ian can pass on some of his golfing knowledge to other residents.

Ian has also arranged to have golf balls and golf clubs available at no cost to Kincarrathie.

Starting out in 1958 he worked at Gleneagles as an assistant golf pro, moving to Turnberry six years later, only to return in 1962 at Gleneagles for the professional role, a job he held down until retiring in 1996.

During that time he taught Sean Connery to play some shots for scenes in the James Bond film Goldfinger. And Bing Crosby, a past player at Gleneagles, returned the favour with an invite to Pebble Beach, Florida. James Bond actor Sean Connery was helped out by Ian Marchbank for the golf scenes in Goldfinger
