Welcome for trainee teachers

-

The first primary teaching students have officially started studying at Perth College UHI.

During the college’s Freshers’ Week last week, the first cohort of primary teaching students were welcomed to the brand new course at the Goodlyburn Campus in Perth.

The course organisers already hope this will help support schools across Perth and Kinross.

The course sees the students studying for a professional graduate diploma in primary education (PGDE) for the first time in the Fair City, with 18 weeks of study at Perth College UHI, along with a further 19 weeks of professional practice inside a range of schools themselves.

Katrina MacIntyre, one of the lecturers on the new course, said: “This course is an exciting opportunity for the people of Perth and Kinross as it allows students to develop the knowledge and skills required for their career in teaching without moving away from home.

“It has a focus on building strong links with the local authority whilst educating teachers to work within our schools.

“Our new students are already prepared for their upcoming placement and we are looking forward to strengthening relationships with our local primary schools.”

Michelle Miller is one of the new students on the PGDE course. She said:“I chose this course as I have always wanted to be a teacher. I am interested in the way children learn and develop and would like to be part of this process.

“I chose Perth for two reasons.

The new primary education students at Perth College UHI The first is that I started my academic journey at Perth College UHI, first completing my NC followed by my HNC before completing my degree. Therefore, it felt right to finish my journey at Perth and I am honoured to be able to do so.

“Secondly, I like the way the course is delivered through a blended learning approach, which is structured using work-based placement, virtual learning environment, video conferencing and collaborative group work as this fits in with my family life.”
