Benefits film gets rare screening by CAP

- Melanie Bonn

Challenge Poverty Week in Highland Perthshire will provoke the showing of a film hailed for its unflinching look at being trapped in benefit limbo.

Arranged by Poverty Alliance to run from October 15-21, the week will be an opportunity for organisations to highlight what they are doing to tackle poverty across Scotland.

CAP (Christians Against Poverty) Highland Perthshire has commissioned a special screening in Aberfeldy of the award-winning film “I, Daniel Blake”. The film is on at the Birks Cinema, on Tuesday, October 17 at 3.30pm.

This will be followed by refreshments and a panel discussion with people working alongside those affected by some of the issues raised.

Highlighting the issue, Pam Thomson, CAP community link coordinator said: “It may surprise some that in 2010, Highland Perthshire had some concentrations of child poverty which were above the Perth and Kinross average (11%) and close to the Scottish average of 19%.

“CAP has been providing free debt services in Highland Perthshire for almost four years now, supporting people who are struggling with unmanageable debt in our remote and rural communities.

“Showing the Ken Loach film, “I Daniel Blake” is CAP Highland Perthshire’s most imaginative venture yet.

“We’re inviting along CAP’s many referral agency contacts and our councillors and MSPs, business people and other local movers and shakers.

“And, of course, we’re hoping that many of our friends and supporters in the local community will join us for this event.”

Tickets cost £15, and can only be bought from CAP, so email pamelathomson@capuk.org A scene from Ken Loach’s I, Daniel Blake
