A busy Perthshire road junction is to benefit from a major upgrade, starting this week.

A section of the northbound A90 near Perth between Barnhill and Kinfauns, as well as the northbound offslip at Barnhill Interchange, is in line for road maintenance improvements worth almost £390,000.

This investment from Transport Scotland will ensure that the northbound section of the A90 between Barnhill Junction and Kinfauns Junction, used by around 18,500 vehicles every day, continues to operate more safely for years to come.

The resurfacing work will get under way at 7.30pm on Friday, October 27, and will take place over the weekend, working continuously until 6.30am on Monday, October 30.

To help keep workers and road users safe during the works, a contraflow system will be in place on the southbound carriageway between Barnhill Junction and Kinfauns Junction to direct traffic away from the works area.

A reduced speed limit of 50mph will also be in place during the contraflow for safety.

Due to the location of the resurfacing operations, the Kinfauns Castle Junction will be closed over the weekend during the works, from Friday, October 27 at 7.30pm to Monday morning at 6.30am.

A signed local diversion route will be in place for traffic normally using the Kinfauns Castle Junction.

Preliminary works will take place overnight on Thursday, October 26, to prepare for the traffic management arrangements ahead of the work beginning on Friday evening.

In addition to the resurfacing improvements on the carriageway this weekend, improvements to the northbound off-slip at Barnhill Junction Interchange from Friarton Bridge will be made over two nights from Tuesday, October 24, 7.30pm to 6.30am.

The northbound off-slip from the M90 after Friarton Bridge will be closed for safety during working hours, with traffic diverted to Kinfauns. Southbound traffic will still be able to access the Barnhill Interchange and M90 as normal.

Consultation has been carried out with local residents to inform them of the works and the diversion route in place.

Andy Thompson, BEAR Scotland’s North East Unit representative, said: “This £390,000 investment from Transport Scotland will greatly improve and strengthen this section of the A90, as well as create a smoother and safer journey for motorists.

“We’ve taken steps to minimise disruption for motorists as much as possible during the improvements, including carrying out the works under a contraflow traffic management system keeping traffic constantly moving past the works, and scheduling the improvements to take place in one weekend to minimise the overall impact to motorists.
