Global gathering of country dancers

-

Perth is getting ready to welcome hundreds of Scottish country dancers from all over the world next month.

The Royal Scottish Country Dance Society is holding its 2017 conference and AGM in Perth’s Bell’s Sports Centre from Friday, November 3 until Sunday, November 5.

Over 500 dancers from as far afield as Russia and Australia are expected to descend on the Fair City for the weekend, which promises a discussion of business, a teaching conference, and a lot of dancing and socialising.

This year will also see the new addition of a Friday evening ceilidh with Triple Trouble Ceilidh Band, which will be open to all.

Helen Russell, the society’s chairman, said:“We are looking forward to Perth, once again, hosting dancers from all over the world. The event is significant for the city and our conference weekend is a great opportunity to take part, not just in the business of the society, but to dance and enjoy the fun and friendship of Scottish country dancing, ceilidh dancing and music.”

As part of the weekend, Saturday morning shoppers will be treated to a dancing display in St John’s shopping centre by the society’s youth demonstration team, including primary school children from Perth led by Jane Rattray.

There will also be a civic reception on Saturday evening hosted by ballroom dancing teacher and Perth Provost Dennis Melloy, where scrolls of honour will be presented to two society members to recognise their outstanding contribution to Scottish country dancing.

Tickets for the Friday night ceilidh in the sports centre’s coaching hall cost £9, under 16s £4.50, visit www.rscds.org to book a place.
