African drum duo leaves lasting echo

- Melanie Bonn

On Wednesday two fantastic drummers from Kenya wind up a visit to Perthshire with a free event at Perth Museum.

And later in the week they offer a workshop at Pitlochry Theatre.

Coming from Kenya, Adam Chienjo and Henry Anyanga generally known as Izo - have enjoyed a three week ‘Artists in Residence’ stint in Perth Museum and Art Gallery, ending this Friday.

Adam and Izo have thrilled people in small venues all over the county with their percussion skills in a series of workshops and they have been out and about making a film of music and dance in various locations.

They put on a show last week at the Crannog on Loch Tay and also at the Big Shed, Tombreck a few miles down the loch.

Adam is a dancer, choreographer and performer and Izo is a musician drummer and singer-songwriter .

In their art forms the pair connect back into their own cultural history while at the same time looking outwards to the culture of today and of others.

Their visit has been arranged and facilitated by Perthshire visual artist Su Grierson as part of her LookLook art project, which has brought over 60 international artists to Perthshire since 2001.

At Perth Museum tomorrow night from 6-8pm there will be African disco music, drumming, a gallery exhibition and refreshments.

Come to watch and listen, or if you are a musician then bring an instrument to jam/play/sing/ dance with these Kenyan artists.

For catering, it is essential inform the museum you will be coming by emailing: museum@culturepk. org.uk

Then on Friday at Pitlochry Festival Theatre, there’s a Drumming and Movement workshop with Adam Chienjo and Izo from 6-8pm.
