Firm puts energies into speedy build
LangToon company’s Grand Designs role
Auchterarder-based Perthshire construction business JML Contracts got a top job working with Grand Designs’ Kevin McLeod.
The company featured on Channel Four’s hit housebuilding TV show last Wednesday and came away from the project with a successful six-level energy efficient build under its belt.
The spell in the spotlight followed how a couple got a ‘compact’ property in east London, built on a narrow shed-sized site of approximately 9.5m x 4m. The completed home is potentially the smallest two-bedroom house in the capital.
For the task, JML Contracts put into action a method of speedy house building, using its bespoke Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs).

As part of the filming, presenter McCloud visited JML’s factory in Auchterarder, with the architect filming at the development Kevin client to see the team construct the house in advance.
This was the first time the team had visited a SIPs factory before, and also the first time they had ever completed a pre-construction build.
As well as being speedy to complete, the SIPs method ensures optimum thermal efficiency for the completed home, up to a standard that qualified it to be judged ‘Passive House’ standard.
Family-owned JML employs 21 people in Perthshire and has seen business growth of 30 per cent year on year since 2015.
John Langley, director at JML Contracts, commented: “SIPs is one technology which could help to reshape the future of housebuilding in the UK, but the country still lags
