MUSIC TO OUR EARS Perthshire to hostTWO new major concerts

Securing two major cultural events in the space of a week has been described as music to the ears in terms of a boost to the local economy.

Scone Palace was this week announced as one of the hosts for BBC Music’s Biggest Weekend in May – an announceme­nt which came on the same day it was revealed internatio­nal superstar Lionel Richie is playing the Fair City’s McDiarmid Park on June 3.

The two-day BBC gig is to feature Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds and Nigel Kennedy playing with the Scottish Symphony Orchestra, as well as others still to be confirmed.

And Vicki Unite, chief executive of Perthshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “For Perth to be selected as the Scottish city of choice for these major dates demonstrat­es its ability to attract and cater for events of this size.

“The benefits will be seen throughout the whole region - and beyond - and those involved have experience and a proven ability to host events of this type.

“The promotiona­l opportunit­ies for the area are substantia­l what a showcase for Perthshire. These events will attract visitors of all ages and all tastes who can experience the area, plus images will be beamed across the world highlighti­ng Perthshire’s idea location, hospitalit­y and beauty, clearly showing what a great place it is with a rich cultural offering.

“There has been a lot of work going on behind the scenes to secure these events and those involved are to be commended for their vision and drive for the good of the local economy.”

Dawn Fuge, co-chair of Perth Traders’ Associatio­n, added: “This is absolutely wonderful news for the music loving people of Perth and for the city as a whole.

“We expect that this will attract a large number of visitors to Perth and its environs generating

business for many sectors in addition to being a fantastic event and a festive weekend.”

Craig Smith from Concorde Music Shop on the city’s Scott Street continued the chorus of praise by adding:“Maybe we will be able to get Noel Gallagher down to do a signing!

“It is a great thing for the city from a music point of view, it’s a real coup for the area. It gets Perth’s name going as a place for music Lionel Richie at McDiarmid is the only gig he is doing in Scotland, and the concert hall has been getting a few names too, like Robert Plant.”

Allan Young, conductor of Perth Symphony Orchestra, admitted:“I am very excited. Nigel Kennedy has appeared at the Perth Festival of the Arts and he is a unique talent. He is a one of a kind with his jazz and classical prowess, so this is something I would encourage PSO members to attend.

“Nigel has appeared with lots of rock and pop folk such as Paul McCartney and Kate Bush and has one of the top all-time classical albums. He is appealing to all generation­s.

“Also, if Scone Palace is seen to be successful it will be great for Perth and Kinross’classical scene.”
