Let Harry take you on an African adventure
Photographer and filmmaker Harry Hook speaks later tonight on a lifetime of adventures in Africa.
In this, the last talk in the ‘Inspiring People’ series put on by the Royal Scottish Geographic Society, Harry will be giving an evening lecture on Tuesday, March 13 on his dramatic photography work.
The talk takes place in Perth’s Salutation Hotel at 7.30pm and includes images from his book, ‘A Lens on Life in Africa’.
Hook knows his subject, having spent over 40 years taking photographs all over the gigantic and varied continent.
The seasoned snapper, who’s worked for Getty Images and top international magazines, will be sharing exquisite images of the cultural changes that he’s observed, as people migrate from land to city in sub-Saharan Africa.
The stories that go with these pictures make this RSGS event very special. Harry will focus predominantly on the theme of migration in his lecture.
In sub-Saharan Africa, millions upon millions of people are on the move, leaving behind their villages in search of a different life.
“The pace of this change has been staggering in recent years,” Harry said.
“Think about how everyone has become connected by the mobile telephone. It has revolutionised life and made people want to be part of something bigger and more sophisticated than the hard rural life they were born to.
“The pace of change has been seismic, in some cases it is the equivalent to our Industrial Revolution.
“Distinct rural societies and tribal groupings that once predominated in the countryside are becoming lost within these urban populations.
“You really see it when nomadic tribes settle in one place. A lot of the cultural differences are being lost at a frightening rate and I have tried to document that.”
Harry was brought up in East Africa and has also worked as an awardwinning film writer, producer and director, most notably on titles such as Photographing Africa (2014), an emotional BBC4 documentary about his own career.
Tickets for the talk can be bought online via the RSGS website and may also be available on the door: £10 to visitors and £8 for Tiso Outdoor Experience Cardholders.
Entry is free for RSGS members, U18s and students. Harry Hook
