Meet Birks’ daredevils

Over 120 daring film fans – aged from eight to over 80 – took part in a fully-booked event to celebrate five years of The Birks cinema, raising a thousand pounds more than their target for shinning down ropes in public.

On Saturday, April 14 passing drivers looked up at the spectacle as instructor­s from Wee Adventures and Perth College UHI talked folk down from the movie house roof.

An amazing £6,000 and counting was brought in for the cinema’s future upkeep by their daredevil exploits and all 120 made it down safe without a hitch.

Katherine and Scott Rix from Stanley took the challenge. Having celebrated their wedding in the auditorium three years ago, the couple returned to abseil down with their new baby, four-month-old daughter Skye.

Spirited local resident and OAP Margaret Jarvis last abseiled on her honeymoon more than 50 years ago and said:“It all came back to me. I’d love to do it again.”

Youngest entrant Jack Dimmock had just turned eight in time to be eligible to take his descent.

Erin Lee who took part on her 11th birthday and fuelled up with a birthday cake celebratio­n with friends and family inside after.

Offering an impressive view from the pavement was Tony Taucher from Strathtay, who abseiled down the cinema in his kilt. Tough Tony declared:“I walk the hills in this kilt and it was no more draughty than that.”
