There was success for Perth curry houses at this week’s Scottish Curry Awards.

Four restaurants went home with prizes from the glitzy award ceremony in Glasgow’s Crowne Plaza Hotel on Monday night.

The big Perthshire winner on the evening was Tabla Restaurant, which picked up the award for outstanding curry of the year for the whole of Scotland.

The accolade – given for the best dish tasted by judges in the whole of Scotland – saw the Perth restaurant push aside hot spots from the likes of Glasgow and Dundee.

Owner Praveen Kumar was on a beach in India when he was given the heads up that his restaurant had won.

And he posted his congratulations to his team on social media.

He said: “I am very proud of you. Thank you, every one of you, for your hard work and dedication.

“My special thanks to all our regular guests. You have been the foundation of Tabla. Without you we wouldn’t have achieved it.”

The ecstatic dad-of-two and cook school teacher added: “Thank you Debasish Naik Dada for representing Tabla to collect the award. You’ve been a great advisor.

“Note: It’s 1.45am in the morning in India and I can’t sleep. I’m over the moon.”

There were regional awards for three more Perth restaurants. Nawaab of Perth was recognised as the best dining experience in central Scotland, while the best loved restaurant in the region was Everest Inn.

Bhola Khanal, director of The Everest Inn, said: “It was a fantastic night, and a big surprise to win because it is voted for by the customers. We didn’t know we were going to get the award.

“We knew we were finalists, but to go and win the award was such a happy moment because we are quite a small place so it was good to be awarded like this.”

Finally, The Aladdins Indian Takeaway was named best takeaway in central Scotland.

Now in their 11th year, the Scottish Curry Awards acknowledge and celebrate the effort and devotion of the Scottish Curry industry.
