Maximise your potential when you coil until you toil

-

I often get asked the famous question: ‘how do I increase my distance?’

This is effectively down to the amount of swing speed one can generate during the down swing.

If there is a limited amount of speed generated, then unfortunately this will limit the distance that can be produced.

But there are ways to make sure you maximise your own potential.

In picture one my posture is fairly text book in terms of my spine angle and knee flex.

This is important as it allows my hips to rotate correctly during the back swing.

In picture two you will see my belt buckle has moved to around 45 degrees. This is a result of my hips turning (coiling) on the back swing. If you struggle with flexibility do not be alarmed if your right leg starts to straighten.

We do not want to consciously try to do this, but if it happens it is the result of the hips coiling which is a good thing.

When other muscles are tight the right leg may straighten to compensate.

Moving onto picture three, you can see my hips have turned fully on the way down, all the way to the finish position.

Think of the overall swing as a coil. If you wind the swing up on the back swing, it can then release like a spring on the down swing. And therefore you can create more power.
