Swifts are knocked out of cup

-

Jeanfield Swifts were knocked out of the GA Cup at the quarter final stage during the week.

Manager Ross Gunnion was not impressed with having to play the fixture, a 3-1 loss away at Carnoustie, on a Wednesday night.

Despite the disappointment, the result now allows the Riverside men to focus solely on the league.

Gunnion said: “The league is definitely the priority and even more so given that the east region have seen fit to send us to play a quarter final of a cup away at Carnoustie on a Wednesday night.

“That is knowing full well our chances of getting players off work early and through rush hour traffic to Carnoustie are incredibly challenging.

“I think that’s a perfect example of why so many junior clubs voted to join the pyramid structure and the framework that goes with it.”

Gunnion has turned attentions to this weekend’s home game against Broughty Athletic.

He said: “In terms of Broughty, we are playing a much more settled and structured team now that Jamie McCunnie has taken over.

“They try and play attractive football and have quality throughout.

“They are arguably the biggest team in Tayside now so the expectation will be on them to establish themselves as a Super League challenger going forward.

“We have to play a little smarter than we have been recently.

“We’re playing good football but making the odd error here and there which stems from sometimes trying too hard or over playing.

“I can’t fault the lads too much as they are still learning each game.

“But with eight league games remaining we need to see everything click into place.”
