Tony set to sha-la-la la-land in Birnam

- Ross Gardiner

Is this the way to Highland Perthshire?

That is the question Tony Christie fans from across Scotland will be asking as the veteran performer kicks off his UK tour in Birnam later this month.

The 75-year-old singer is heading across the UK from the end of May until the end of June, and his first stop north of the border will be the A9 arts club on Wednesday, May 30.

Speaking to the Perthshire Advertiser, Tony said: “I’m heading to quite a few new places this year, and Birnam is one.

“We had the idea to try and get to smaller venues, as I’ve been to Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen lots of times. I’m looking forward to it, as you always meet new people.

“It’s a short tour of much more intimate places, and it’s about getting back in the game instead of sitting in the studio.

“I used to come to Scotland for weeks at a time in the 60s and 70s, but this will be different. I do a lot more album stuff now, but you have to keep putting in the songs that people appreciate.”

Over half a century on, Tony still loves performing on stage, and can’t wait to perform some of his new tracks.

“We’ve been getting

Tony Christie is performing at Birnam Arts Centre this month the new music ready over the last two months. We recorded the album from October to December, and it’s completely different.

“It’s all brand new and includes contemporary writers who have worked with the likes of Ed Sheeran, so it’s very up to date.

“We were recording in Portugal three weeks ago, and it was frustrating that I couldn’t perform them live.

“We’ve tried a bit of this and a bit of that, and it’s very modern - it sounds like what is played on the radio now. The problem with the album is they all sound like singles!”

Tickets, priced at £25.25, are available online and at Birnam Arts Club.
