Let’s Cook Scotland, a cookery school based in Abernethy, Perthshire is helping to educate and inspire pupils to get cooking and to learn more about the food they eat.
The‘Beat the Takeaway’ Competition run by Royal Highland Education Trust (RHET) Perth and Kinross encouraged pupils to look at making their own version of their favourite takeaway meal. P4-7 pupils had to prepare a recipe and work out costings, timings and prepare a project explaining the farm to fork story.
The two teams from Logierait Primary School presented their projects on Thursday, May 3.
Eve Kemp and Olivia Reynolds were awarded first place with Matthew Jaworski and Craig Meldrum a close second. Following the judging, pupils were treated to a pizza making masterclass from Cookery School owner Sarah Mellersh where they learned how to make their own pizzas from scratch.
Sarah said:“I am very passionate about teaching children to cook at an early age and this project has allowed pupils to think more carefully about what they are eating, where is has come from and how it is prepared.”
Mrs Brown, teacher at Logierait Primary School said:“This project has encompassed a number of different learning outcomes within the Curriculum for Excellence and allowed pupils to develop skills across numeracy, literacy and health and wellbeing. This project has been popular with the pupils and has sparked a real interest in food provenance and cooking whilst developing life skills for the future.”
