- Melanie Bonn

Sophie Ramsay and Sarah Smout are two uniquely talented songwriters and musicians who will be performing at the Big Shed, Loch Tay on Sunday, May 20.

Equally acclaimed as solo artists, Sophie and Sarah have been captivating audiences throughout Scotland and are now on their Highlands and Islands Tour 2018.

Individually unique and talented, together Sophie and Sarah are unforgettable.

Perthshire born and bred, Sophie Ramsay combines old and new folk, singing Scots folk songs alongside originals with freshly poetic lyrics and European folk influences.

Her 2013 album ‘The Glassy Mountain’ features performances by some of the best folk and jazz musicians in Scotland.

It has been described as ‘undeniably beautiful’ (fRoots), ‘Joanna Newsom meets Belle and Sebastian’ (R2) and as ‘timeless, outstanding… for those who really hear a song’ (Folk Music Worth Listening To). Sophie Ramsay

Her latest release (2016) is ‘The Seas Between Us,’ a collection of old Scots and Gaelic Songs produced by Matheu Watson.

‘A beautiful and heartfelt album, Ramsay’s ethereal voice laces through these songs with a delightful and sensitive tenderness. Atmospheric, elegant and beguiling, hers is an exciting Cellist Sarah Smout

new voice to carry Burns onwards’ (Songlines).

‘Deeply moving... The album contains 12 old Scots and Gaelic songs, but feels more like a chamber folk suite in 12 movements, telling a story of love, severance, grief and recovery’ (fRoots).

Sarah Smout is a cellist, singer and songwriter from Yorkshire who has toured the UK, Europe and New Zealand working with Rachel Ries, King Creosote, Michael Chapman, Gren Bartley Jess Morgan and Hannah Trigwell.

But as a singer and poet in her own right, it was only a matter of time before she began a solo career.

2016 saw the release of her EP ‘Decision to Leave’ – songs with cello which are original, beautifully crafted and hugely touching, exploring themes like home, land, love and climate change.

Sarah spins uniquely beautiful melodies on cello into her poetrydriven, landscape inspired lyrics, creating a truly original sound. ‘Stirring cello…that was to be the hallmark of the whole album’ (The Living Tradition). ‘Startlingly good arrangements’ (FRUK Live Review – Wickham Festival).
