South Inch success for shifted Perth Show

Could be its future home

- Rachel Clark

Olivia Grant in action during the novice working hunter class Perth Show could remain on the main South Inch in the future.

That was the view expressed after a hugely successful hosting of the event over the weekend.

Thousands of farmers from across the UK descended on the Fair City and were joined by as many locals out to enjoy the sunshine as well as the stalls and other activities.

Among them was Provost Dennis Melloy and he told the PA Perth and Kinross Council will look closely at considering the main South Inch for future shows.

He said: “It is brilliant. The feeling I am getting is this ground is more inclusive, stands are larger and people have a lot of time to come and go through the ground.

“A lot of thought has been put into the show from the committee - last year the animals were away at the top end and detached from the main arena.

Neil said the most successful part of the show was the weather.

Last year’s show was a washout, and the ground on the Lesser South Inch has still not fully recovered.

He joked: “My knees are so sore from praying.

“The weather is perfect, so we are not allowed to talk about last year now.

“The weather makes the show because it encourages people to come out and we have been very busy.

“There is a tremendous amount of kids here, so we can introduce them to farming and show the ‘farm to plate’ journey as we bring the countryside to the town.

“We have been very well supported and the nice thing is it brings benefits to the town.

“The amount of people who go into town afterwards means everyone gets a spin-off from the show.

“Another successful year, and a nice change from last year.”
