St John’s plan to stop selling plastic cartons Centre to reduce carbon footprint

- Rachel Clark

Staff at St John’s Shopping Centre in Perth are taking further steps to try and reduce their carbon footprint.

The shopping centre has recently started ordering glass bottled milk in place of their usual plastic cartons.

And, instead of grabbing their milk from a supermarket, they are now ordering it in from a local farm - Robertson’s Dairy in Blairgowrie.

Derek Martin, marketing manager at the shopping centre, said they are all keen to try and do more to reduce their carbon footprint and the amount of waste they produce.

He said: “We have really ramped up efforts this year to reduce our carbon footprint.

“Because we are not a huge centre, it is difficult to make big changes, so we have focused on smaller changes and this is one of them, getting rid of plastic cartons and getting glass bottles delivered instead.

“There is a big misconception that you can’t have an impact, but all the little things add up.

“It has been painless, really simple and straight forward to switch.

“We are now thinking, ‘why didn’t we do this sooner?’”

Staff are also pleased they have also been able to support a local dairy farm in this new venture.

Derek continued: “It is another step in the right direction and we have had positive feedback from staff saying it
