Lauren goes for gold

- Rachel Clark

One-time athlete Lauren Hendry is set to send ripples of laughter through Perthshire tonight.

Lauren will be performing her one-woman‘TetraDecathlon’show at Strathearn Community Campus, Crieff.

Despite having never set foot on a running track in her life, Lauren Hendry decided to take on the gruelling tetra-decathlon, joining only a dozen other women in the world championships.

The tetra-decathlon is a 14-event track and field athletics competition.

The list of events is the 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, 100m hurdles, 200m hurdles, 400m hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot put, javelin and discus.

A spokesperson for the campus said:“A one-woman ‘Cool Runnings’, this amusingly audacious solo show charts Lauren’s journey as she trains for and competes in this most taxing of sporting events, whilst asking pertinent questions about the psychology of sport and what drives us to compete.

“‘Tetra-Decathlon’is a celebration of coming last and then coming back for more.

“This show is a onewoman Eddie the Eagle, as Lauren Hendry worked out that she could compete in the world championships of the tetra-decathlon almost by default, as not many Scottish women do this sport.

“It’s a great yarn and Jenna Watt makes her directorial debut.”

Lauren Hendry said:“A little bit of me wants to believe that the reason I’m not in a state of abject terror is that competing in a tetra-decathlon has prepared me for such occasions.

“But the truth of it is that I’m incredibly lucky to have such bloody brilliant people around me and so I know it’s going to be a winner.”

Tonight’s show in Crieff is part of the cultural programme running alongside the 2018 European Championships in Glasgow.

‘Tetra-Decathlon’starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost £5 from Eventbrite.
