Swifts praised for ‘perfect’ start in seniors

-

Jeanfield Swifts ........ 3 Leith Athletic ............ 0 delighted the Swifts boss. Chris Scott opened the scoring before youngster Richard Donovan added a second-half double to seal the triumph in style.

“To finish the group in top spot is a perfect start to the season and credit goes to the players for the work rate they’ve put in so far,”Gunnion said.

“I thought we were comfortable throughout and deserved the victory.

“If I’m being critical I would say we should have scored more and we were a little too relaxed in our play at times, but it’s our third game in a week and our third win so I can’t really complain.

“It was good to see Richard getting two goals late on in the game as he’d worked hard all afternoon and never got impatient or frustrated.

“He needed the 90 minutes under his belt after missing the start of preseason, and to walk away with two goals will fill him with confidence.

“The clean sheet is always a pleasing aspect and credit goes to Mark Mitchell and the back four for never losing concentration. Mark had two good saves in the game after being quiet for long spells.

“And I thought Aaron Whitehead was excellent in the centre of defence.”

It’s back to the hard graft in training this week for Swifts with Gunnion adding:“We certainly can’t take our foot off the pedal.

“We’ve got another cup game next week before the league campaign kicks off and things are only going to get tougher from here.”
