Refurbished swap shop open again

Project aims to reduce area’s carbon footprint

- Rachel Clark

A swap shop which aims to reduce waste across Perth officially reopened this week.

Letham Climate Challenge’s swap shop on Garth Avenue sprung back into life on Wednesday, August 8.

The project aims to reduce the area’s carbon footprint by taking items that would otherwise be thrown in the bin, and passing them onto someone else in the community who will use it.

Although the shop has proved popular amongst Letham residents since it opened, it was closed over the early summer for a refurbishment. And now it’s as busy as ever working to reduce the amount of waste from the community going to landfill.

And, it is not just the swap shop Letham Climate Challenge is working on.

Other projects such as community allotments to grow fruit and vegetables are also going strong, and encouraging residents to think more economically about the environment around them.

Some of the items donated to the swap shop are used to make starter packs for residents in Letham who are moving into a new house.

Perth City North councillors John Rebbeck and Dave Doogan were at the opening this week.

Councillor Rebbeck said: “Councillor Doogan and I are delighted to support this fantastic project which not only reduces the amount of waste going to landfill but supports and sustains tenants and residents from the local area and beyond.

“The local allotments also encourage residents to grow fruit and vegetables with all its associated benefits.

“Projects such as these are typical of the way our community of Letham and the broader north Perth area come together to support each other and the continued success of the Letham Climate Challenge is a testament to the hard work of the many

The SNP representative continued: “The late Liz Dewar was, of course, instrumental in its good work, and hopefully we can all make sure that the swap shops will continue to be something she would be proud of.”

Letham Climate Challenge’s swap shop can be visited on Garth Avenue, opposite Our Lady’s RC Primary School.

The swap shop is open every Monday, Wednesday and Friday between 10am and 3pm for items to be donated and reused.
