CoachTony delighted as sponsors show support

Fair City Amateur Boxing Club will be feeling and looking sharp this season after securing a new set of kit.

The unique strips, which include the Black Watch tartan, have been sponsored by a number of local businesses.

Quinn Cleaning Contractors, R Stevenson Joiner and Contractor, Stonecraft Paving and Driveways, Unite Security and Electrical and China China have all added their support.

Club members gathered at the Perth Airport-based facility this week to test out the new look and put in the hard graft.

Coach Tony Quinn is grateful to all of those who pitched in to help spread a feel-good factor ahead of competitive action beginning next month.

“We struggle for finances and are self-financed,” Tony explained to the Perthshire Advertiser. “All of the guys that coach, it’s all voluntary stuff.

“Without the sponsors, we just couldn’t afford anything like this.

“We’ve been buying our strips from sports shops - the basic white and black Adidas strips.

“But this is the only time we’ve had our own club tops, which is brilliant.

“It will give everyone a confidence boost going into the ring. They will feel like they are part of something.

“We have a great club here with a great atmosphere. Everyone is part of one big happy family.”

“If you ask them to do something, they’ll do it.

“They listen and there is a lot of hard work physically with the circuit training.”

Having boxed to a high level in his younger years, including being a Scottish international aged 16, Tony now enjoys passing on his expertise.

“This keeps me sane,” he said. “I’d be sitting in the house twiddling my thumbs. It’s good craic and you get a great bit of banter.

“You get to do a bit of training yourself too - I’m 54 now so any training to keep you moving helps.”

Tony highlighted that the club is also open to those simply wanting to improve their fitness.

He said: “During our training classes, just to keep fit, we have up to half a dozen women coming and also have old age pensioners.

“That’s as well as young people who are here to get in shape and learn a little bit about boxing. It’s a really good atmosphere.

“Three nights we try to specifically concentrate on the boxers, specifically the youths.

“The other nights, anyone can come along. We never turn anyone away.

“We give everyone the same attention and we never rush anyone. We tell them that and tell them what they need to work on.

“It’s not the easiest of clubs to get to, we’re not in the middle of town and people need to go out there way - but they do.

“We travel all over the country representing the city.”
