Cut­ting the cake on 40 years

Over two mil­lion items re­lat­ing to ev­ery as­pect of lo­cal his­tory make up Perth and Kin­ross Ar­chive and the use­ful pub­lic re­source cel­e­brates its 40th an­niver­sary this month with a num­ber of events.

Provost Den­nis Mel­loy and se­nior staff from the Perth and Kin­ross Ar­chive were at a civic re­cep­tion event on Fri­day, Novem­ber 2 held at Perth Mu­seum.

A na­tional ini­tia­tive,‘Ex­plore Your Ar­chive’has led to Perth of­fer­ing talks, tours, ex­hi­bi­tions and film screen­ings to be held in the ar­chive and lo­cal li­braries dur­ing Novem­ber.

The ar­chive be­gan in the base­ment of the San­de­man Li­brary in 1978, get­ting a ma­jor up­grade when pur­pose-built fa­cil­i­ties were given to it within AK Bell Li­brary. Each year the ar­chive wel­comes around 1700 re­searchers, re­sponds to ap­prox­i­mately 500 en­quiries and par­tic­i­pates in a wide va­ri­ety of ac­tiv­i­ties help­ing lo­cal com­mu­ni­ties to ex­plore and cel­e­brate their lo­cal her­itage.
