Brig in Bloom put on veggie good show for RHS judges
Britain In Bloom judges Geraldine King and Jim Goodwin with Brig In Bloom committee members and volunteers Brig in Bloom welcomed judges from the Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) Britain in Bloom competition to Bridge of Earn this week.
The Perthshire village is one of 68 finalists across the UK taking part in the gardening contest and is competing in the large village category against five other areas as far afield as Titchfield in Hampshire and Cullbackey in Northern Ireland.
RHS judging pair, Geraldine King and Jim Goodwin, were whisked around on a two hour tour by community members to take in the sights. These included beautiful blooms spilling out of hanging baskets, scattered wild meadows full of colour and to represent the village’s transport heritage: boats, bicycles and a train filled with vibrant flowers.
They also heard from local school children about growing food organically for the community, from a beekeeper about the importance of our pollinators and from the Eco-Church about how to help save swifts.
Kathleen Baird, a local councillor and Brig in Bloom’s chair, said:“It’s wonderful that the whole community has rallied together to get the village prepared. As well as all the beautiful floral displays, environmental responsibilities such as sustainability, conservation, litter, dog fouling and recycling schemes are of equal importance as well as community participation, in particular intergenerational working.”
Brig in Bloom members will find out how they fared at the awards ceremony in London on October 25.
