JUNIORS Carlon strike seals points for Scone
Aaron Carlon was the hero as Scone Thistle struck late to spark wild celebrations against Perthshire rivals Luncarty.
The young forward produced an exquisite piece of play with five minutes remaining to clinch three points and the Jags’first North Super League triumph.
With the score locked at 1-1, he killed the ball inside the box with a fantastic first touch, fronted up the Luncarty defence and found the bottom corner.
Luncarty, off the back of a weekend victory against last year’s champions Lochee United, had the upper hand in the first half and got the opener.
A clever bit of play from Sean Fergus resulted in Arran McKay handling inside the box. Chris Anton was tasked with the responsibility from 12 yards and made no mistake.
Scone showed great resilience to work their way back into this one.
The leveller arrived in the 66th minute when Ross Mitchell won the aerial battle to send a looping header over the Bleachers’goalkeeper.
The Farquharson Park men twice hit the post through substitutes Darren Gray and then Lee Maloney but eventually got their reward.
Carlon showed maturity above his years to produce the goods before resolute defending in the closing stages kept Luncarty at bay.
“I’m delighted with the win and it was a much improved performance from Saturday,”said Jags boss Derek Lawson. “We made a few changes to the team and tactics which helped.
“I am delighted for the players because they worked very hard.”
Both sides are away tomorrow with Scone facing Broughty Athletic and Luncarty playing Downfield.
