School’s pride at Tobermory’s first-class Oxford honours

Tobermory Mackay-Champion A Perthshire man is celebratin­g after being awarded a first class honours degree from the University of Oxford.

Tobermory Mackay-Champion, from Clathy near Crieff, achieved a first class in BA Geology at University College, Oxford, and also picked up the AWE Geophysics Prize for the best finals performanc­e in geophysics and mathematic­s.

Tobermory, who attended Craigclowa­n Preparator­y School in Perth before moving on to Glenalmond College, is now currently doing primary research on the Hylonomus, the first fossil reptile, which is 315 million years old.

He is now planning to continue studying at Oxford to work towards a masters degree in earth sciences, and he hopes to go on to study for a PhD.

Tobermory was captain of Glenalmond College in 2016, and he performed exceptiona­lly well in his exams, achieving straight A*s in chemistry, maths, physics and geography A-levels.

On picking up his degree, Warden Hugh Ouston, head of Glenalmond College, said he was delighted to hear of Tobermory’s success.

He said:“It is always rewarding to hear of former pupils’success after they leave Glenalmond and huge congratula­tions from all at Glenalmond go to Tobermory on achieving a first from Oxford.

“A huge part of what education at Glenalmond is all about unlocking the individual potential of the young people in our care and preparing them for life after school and it is very rewarding for our staff to follow their former pupils’ progress in life, whatever direction they take, after leaving us.”
