Accolades for young Steven and Kenmore team at great taste awards

-

(L-r): Jacqueline Mitchell, Sheila Mitchell, Steven Mitchell and Keith Mitchell Perthshire’s Kenmore Bakery has once again picked up accolades for Perthshire products at the Great Taste Awards, but two of the three products entered this year were baked by 15-year-old apprentice baker Steven.

The Mitchell family operates out of a bakery in Acharn, Loch Tay. Grandma Sheila and grandfather Keith are delighted to announce another successful year with the prestigious award scheme and are even happier the secret of successful baking appears to have been passed down.

Their grandson Steven, still a pupil at Breadalbane Academy, ‘took the biscuit’by baking The Miller’s Crunch snacks that earned two stars for Kenmore and the oatcakes that the judges fancied and gave another star to.

The traditional tablet earned the family another Great Taste 2019 star which they can display with pride.

“We have been putting in items to Great Taste since 2008 and we have won stars every year so far,”said Sheila Mitchell who started the business 25 years ago.

“We never know who is on the various judging tables. The comments and feedback you get are very helpful. About Steven’s oatcakes they said:‘A goodlooking golden oatcake with an even bake, well made with good texture and seasoning a great accompaniment to cheese.’

“We are very proud of apprentice Steven, who was the baker on duty for both biscuits. It’s not a bad result for a wee bakery. It proves hard work and attention does pay off.”

Also celebrating the approval of the Great Taste Award judges was Errichel House and Cottages in Aberfeldy.

Chef Paul Newman said:“I’m uper delighted to receive this news today: Our much loved orange, passion fruit and thyme marmalade has just been given this major seal of approval, three beautiful gold stars.”

The restaurant and Aberfeldy Farmers’Market regular stallholder also got two Great Taste Award stars for its pistachio biscotti, gaining popularity because as well as a perfect accompaniment to coffee, it also happens to be gluten free.
