Council to carry out major work in stages
“By reducing the amount of traffic islands, it will make the junction more pedestrian friendly and safer for routine traffic signal maintenance.
“Additionally, the bus lane will be changed into a cycle lane as the current bus lane is under used and can be difficult for buses to manoeuvre out of during peak times. In order to carry out the works as safely and efficiently as possible, the works will be broken up into three different phases.”
The first phase will begin on Monday and last for six weeks, and will see three-way temporary lights in place, with the majority of the junction layout changes taking place during this time.
Phase two will be from October 7 for four weeks, and will include three -way temporary traffic lights and a ban on daytime northbound traffic .
This will allow construction of a new traffic island adjacent to the northbound lane, and allow for preparation works ahead of the carriageway resurfacing works on Barrack Street to the St Catherine’s Road junction. It is hoped by doing these preparatory works, the upcoming night time works will be quicker, minimising the amount of time needed on site during the night.
Finally phase three, which runs from October 7 for two weeks, will see a full closure of the junction from Barrack Street.
This closure will be in place overnight from 7pm until 6am to make way for resurfacing Barrack Street and Caledonian Road around the junction.
The council spokesperson continued: “During the road closures, the official diversion route will be via Caledonian Road, Glasgow Road, Broxden Roundabout, the A9 bypass, A85, Crieff Road and Dunkeld Road.
“The bus services will be diverted via Muirton and North Muirton, full
Traffic builds up on Atholl Street details will be provided on bus stops, buses and the relevant websites.
“Regrettably, there will be inconvenience caused whilst the works are taking place, however, this shall be kept to a minimum.
“During the works, the temporary traffic signals will be manually controlled by the traffic management operatives to ensure traffic flows as efficiently as possible.
“Additionally, our urban traffic control team will be monitoring the traffic lights within the city centre throughout the works and can intervene as and when required to keep traffic moving in the city centre.”
