‘Working on major project has been life changing’

-

Two Perthshire men say getting jobs on the project to dual the A9 between Luncarty and the Pass of Birnam has been life changing.

Patrick Stewart (19) and David McPhee (22) were both given full time roles after taking on work placements at the construction site.

Balfour Beatty, the contractor appointed by Transport Scotland for the dualling of the A9 just north of Perth, said one of its priorities was to provide employment opportunities for young people in the local area.

The contractor worked with Barnardo’s to offer training and career opportunities, which is where Patrick and David were identified as being strong candidates for work placements.

Patrick and David were offered a two-week work placement each and it proved so successful, they were offered full time roles on the project as general operatives.

David said:“Working for Balfour Beatty has changed my life - it has helped me to support my family and look after my daughter.

“I have received good support and a warm welcome from the site team.

“Being employed by Balfour Beatty has given me a sense of security I didn’t have previously and I am keen to keep doing my best and working hard.”

Colleague Patrick agreed, saying he appreciated having a regular income and routine, as well as being able to keep fit and learn new things every day.

Their placements were part of their work towards a Construction Skills Certification Scheme card.

The card ensures those working on construction sites have had the appropriate training and are qualified for the job.
