Petition to save buses

Lib Dems start campaign

- ROBBIE CHALMERS

Three Lib Dem campaigners have launched a petition to save a number of vital bus services in and around Perth.

Perth City South councillor Willie Wilson, Strathmore councillor Lewis Simpson and campaigner Liz Barrett are calling on Stagecoach to scrap cuts to the number 7, 7A, 7B and Broxden Park and Ride bus services which they fear will “impact on communities across Perth”.

The move is part of widespread changes set to be enforced from Stagecoach, after it recently announced proposals that would see a number of bus services throughout Perth and Kinross reduced or cut completely.

Campaigner Liz Barrett said: “Stagecoach’s plan will cut the number of buses and how often they run.

“They will make it more difficult to use the park and ride and people will end up with a poorer service.

“We have launched the petition calling on Stagecoach to scrap the plan.”

Cllr Willie Wilson said: “Splitting the number 7 and park and ride services makes no sense, and Stagecoach need to think again.

“We are happy to meet with them to discuss in a positive way how we take these services forward.

“But so far they have refused to meet.”

Cllr Lewis Simpson, whose ward includes Scone, added: “Losing the link between Scone and Broxden Park and Ride, and the cuts in frequency could lead not only to a poorer service, but lower bus usage overall.

“As well as residents, visitors come to the park and ride and then take the number 7 into town and beyond.”

In response to the launch of the petition, a spokesperson for Stagecoach East Scotland said: “We operate the Broxden Park and Ride service on behalf of Perth and Kinross Council and are having discussions with them around the terms and conditions of this contract, however there are no plans to change the service at this time.”
