Inchture driving ace on track for success

-

She may be the only female racing in the 2 litre saloons but that sits just fine with Inchture’s Holly Glen.

And now she is hoping to be a real driving force when the 2020 stock car season at Cowdenbeath Racewall powers back into life next month.

Glen, a mechanic at the family garage in Dundee, has been racing stock cars since she was 11 years of age and continues to hold a strong passion for motorsport.

“I started off racing a Ministox and then moved on to the BriSCA Formula IIs, but they began to cost too much so I switched to the saloons,”Glen said.

“A saloon is a fully armoured car powered by a race tuned 2 litre Zetec engine and can reach up to 70mph around a quarter of a mile oval.

“With the cars having bumpers front and back there is plenty of contact and, while the cars can be in pristine condition at the start of the season, they soon sport battle scars.

“I do most of the work on the car myself and don’t mind getting my hands dirty. Racing is in our blood.

“My mum and dad raced a while ago and my brother Barry also races a saloon so it was a natural progression that we raced.

“Just now I am the only female racing a saloon but the adrenaline rush when you do is something else.

“I am accepted as being another saloon driver even though at the Racewall all the others are men. I don’t feel that I have anything to prove.”

Last year’s performance included a number of positives, Glen adding:“I had hoped to have qualified for the 2019 World Championship which was at my home track.

“But as a result of my time off I had to take my chance in the last chance qualifying race but unfortunately it didn’t happen.

“I managed to get a sixth place in the Scottish Championship and third place in one of the qualifying heats for the superbowl, but then came my crash.

“I got a win at the Racewall in one of my heats and picked up a lot of good results during the latter part of the season. And just now I am a few places away from an automatic seeded place for the 2020 Saloon World Final.”

The Cowdenbeath Racewall season starts on March 14.
