Rhee in hospital scare

-

St Johnstone Women have suffered a big injury blow as the league season gets set to swing into life this weekend.

Central defender Rhee Tweedie was forced off with a knee problem late in Sunday’s 6-0 cup defeat against Celtic at McDiarmid Park.

Co-manager Myles Allan confirmed a trip to the hospital was required and he is hoping it will not be a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

“Rhee went down with what looked like a serious knee injury with 10 minutes to go,”Allan revealed.

“She had already headed off to hospital by the time the game finished so we all have our fingers crossed that it’s not as bad as it looked.

“She’s such an important player for us. Not just in terms of what she does on the pitch, but she’s also the type of character that any coach wants in their dressing room.”

Celtic found themselves two ahead at the break in the SWPL Cup group A match before stepping up the pace in the second half.

Allan said:“Firstly, we took the decision to be bold and try and take the game to Celtic. Others may have been more conservative and ended up with a tighter scoreline.

“So the responsibility for the scoreline lies with us as a coaching team rather than the players.

“The tactics worked pretty well in the first half and we had more shots on goal than Celtic and played some excellent football. We felt that we gifted them their two goals before half time.

“Celtic stepped it up in the second half and we didn’t get as close to them so they were able to create more.

“When you’re under that much pressure, the mistakes in defensive areas become more frequent.”
