Martin named boss as Jags look to rise

- MATTHEW GALLAGHER

Scone Thistle this week named Paul Martin as their new manager.

Martin, who has had previous spells with the likes of Newburgh and Kinnoull, replaces Sean Whitworth who stepped down earlier this month.

He takes the reins of a Jags side that is struggling for form.

Goalkeeper Gavin Sorley insists his team-mates will be up for a fight to remain in the North Super League.

Scone sit three points off the bottom of the table with only Kirrie Thistle and Forfar West End sitting behind them.

Recent league results have left a lot to be desired but Sorley is backing the Farquharson Park squad to come out fighting and rise up the standings.

“Every game is important as we move into the tail end of the season,”he said. “We have 10 league games left to get as many points on the board as we can to avoid that relegation spot.

“The lads are working hard at training and we know we are in for a tough few months, but we are all relishing the challenge.

“We want to give ourselves the best opportunity to climb up the league.

“We are also still involved in the East Region Cup and have an away tie against Tayport to play.

“As much as it will be a hard end to the season, you have to look forward to these games and relish the challenge to improve.”

Scone’s planned cup game with Tayport was called off last week due to the weather, with waterlogged pitches resulting in postponements not only locally but across the country.

And their scheduled league fixture this weekend has now been moved due to Broughty Athletic’s Scottish Junior Cup involvement.

The lack of football is not ideal, Sorley saying: “It’s frustrating as you want to get into the next game after a defeat to try and put things right and go out and put in a good performance.

“We have been training hard over the last few weeks and will continue to do that up to our next game to give us the best possible chance of winning.”
