Butcher wants return to Saints
Regardless of how the 2019/20 Scottish Premiership season ends, Matt Butcher would welcome a return to St Johnstone when the new one starts.
The Bournemouth loanee impressed in midfield during his brief Perth stint after arriving in January before the pandemic cut the season short.
The 22-year-old has spoken to Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe about getting more game time on loan at another club, which could mean a return to the Fair City.
He said:“What happens next season will be down to Bournemouth but I loved my time at St Johnstone and would be open to going back if that’s what everyone wanted.
“I feel my time was cut short because of the virus and I would have loved to end the season and see where we got to.
“On a personal level, I loved the few months I was there and enjoyed working with the manager so we will see what happens.
“Bournemouth were happy with the move for me. I actually spoke to the manager when I was driving back down the road.
“They wanted me to go out and find games, so getting to St Johnstone and playing was perfect.
“I still feel like I need games to prove my fitness so we’ll see what happens and if Bournemouth want me to go out again.
“It took a few games to get sharp again but I was hitting what I think I’m capable of when the whole thing was closed down.
“But you just have to be philosophical about it. There are people in far worse positions than I am or we are as footballers.
“From my perspective, I got out to a club I enjoyed and played some games so it was a good few months regardless of what happens with the rest of the season now.”
Meanwhile, despite the beautiful game being on hiatus, St Johnstone are seeking volunteers to “assist with the effort when the time comes to get back to the football”.
The roles to be filled mainly include general housekeeping to get the stadium game ready, with jobs such as painting and light cleaning likely to be required.
A club spokesperson said:“When this work would be undertaken will of course depend on when it is safe for the game to return but the club would love to hear from any interested supporters in the meantime so we can draw up a volunteer list.
“The work will largely take place at evenings and weekends.
“If you would like to lend your help and support to your club in this way, please email BeverleyMayer@ perthsaints.co.uk with your name, address and a telephone number.
“We are looking for volunteers aged 16 and above.”
