Plan to give Bob proper send-off

- KATHRYN ANDERSON

The leader of the SNP group at Perth and Kinross Council (PKC) hopes the authority can give the late Cllr Bob Band a“proper send-off”after lockdown.

Councillors took the opportunity to pay tribute to Cllr Band when they“met”virtually for the first time since lockdown.

The much-loved SNP councillor, who represented the Perth City South ward for more than a decade, passed away last month.

Members of the planning and development management committee were keen to pay tribute to the“gentleman”who served on the committee.

Cllr Band was also praised for how bravely he battled cancer.

Convener Cllr Roz McCall opened the meeting by paying tribute, saying there would be further tributes at future meetings.

She praised the“significant contribution”he put into Perth and Kinross as a planning authority having served as a vice-convener on the committee and on the local review body.

The Conservative councillor added:“He was a gracious and helpful colleague. He was a gentleman.”

SNP leader at the council Cllr Grant Laing was also given the chance to pay tribute to his colleague.

He said:“I hope we can have a proper send-off when we come out of this.”

He added:“It was his humanity: the way he broke the news of his illness to all of us and the way he bore his illness all the way through this, turning up to committee meetings, etc - never losing his sense of humour.

“If I could face what he did with half the humility and strength he had I would be proud.”
