Concern at rise in roadkill despite rules on travelling

- MELANIE BONN

The rise in roadkill on Perthshire’s country roads when traffic is meant to be minimal - is causing dismay.

Tayside and Central Scotland Moorland Group posted a picture of a rare black grouse which had been mowed down on the road between Aberfeldy and Dunkeld.

Elsewhere on social media a picture of a lamb, newly killed by a car near Kinloch Rannoch, told the same story and other comments claimed three red squirrels were dead at the roadside along Glenlyon.

Tayside and Central Scotland Moorland Group commented on the grouse: “Despite the rules of lockdown and the simple message of ‘stay at home’, we are still finding our roads busy and people driving too fast.

“The result, our wildlife is getting run over and this time it is a red-listed blackcock, the fourth in the last fortnight.

“This is also a time when chicks are about to appear so we urge you to please take your time on country roads if you feel the need to be out and about, assuming it’s essential travel.”
