Vital work on Friarton
An“essential”bridge maintenance project on the M90 Friarton Bridge has resumed and is expected to last six weeks.
BEAR Scotland said it is“vital”the works are carried out in order to maintain the integrity and safety of the trunk road network.
The project originally began in March when teams installed a temporary work access platform as well as removing the existing bridge parapet.
Work on the bridge, which carries the motorway over the River Tay, was paused for safety reasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The remainder of the project recommenced on Monday and will see teams complete repairs to a short section of the reinforced concrete edge beam on the southbound carriageway.
The scheme is designed as a trial repair in advance of wider maintenance work to the full structure.
A single lane closure on the southbound carriageway will be in place every night to allow works to be carried out safely, with the majority of work between 7.30pm and 5am.
In order to create a safe and accessible worksite, narrow lanes are in place and a 30mph speed restriction is in force.
Andy Thompson, BEAR Scotland’s North East representative, said:“At this difficult time the safety of our employees, our supply chain and local community remains a top priority during this essential maintenance project.
“All personnel will be subject to strict physical distancing protocols in line with government guidance to ensure they are kept safe.
“Thorough risk assessments have been developed and cleansing stations will be implemented on site to ensure all staff remain safe.
“The bridge maintenance work on the
M90 Friarton will ensure that this location of the network remains safe and reliable.
“The work is also an important step towards developing a repair strategy for the whole structure.
“The traffic management is essential to keep everyone safe during this project, however to minimise any impact to road users as much as possible we’re carrying out all construction at night.
“As always, we’ll do all we can to ensure that this project is completed as quickly and as safely as possible.”
Also this week, investigations will be carried out on the A90 overbridge at Glencarse which was badly damaged in October last year following a vehicle strike.
The overnight work is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, June 24 between 9.30pm and 6.30am.
An overnight closure of the northbound A90 will be in place during the investigation works.
All motorists travelling northbound will be diverted from the A90 and through Glencarse Main Street, where they will rejoin the A90 and resume their journey.
Local access will be maintained at all times and all traffic management will be removed outwith working hours. The A90 southbound will be unaffected.
