Face masks for all travellers

-

Residents in Perth and Kinross have been reminded that the wearing of face coverings on public transport is now mandatory.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon last week set out the rules for the use of face coverings in order to reduce the risk of coronavirus transmission.

The move was set out in tandem with the announcement that Scotland will now move through phase two of the four-stage route map out of lockdown.

The use of face coverings will apply to all passengers and staff in Perth and Kinross, although there will be exemptions for those with specific medical reasons and children under five.

Transport secretary Michael Matheson stressed the importance of the new rules.

“Our message remains clear that public transport should be for key workers and those who need it most and can’t walk or cycle to work,” he said.

“Capacity is reduced to enable physical distancing and operators are not yet running full services.

“However, as we work towards recovery and more people return to work and further local leisure opportunities begin to open up, it is vital that measures are put in place to protect everyone’s health.

“We are asking people to take personal responsibility to do the right thing.

“Wearing a face covering while on public transport means you are playing your part in the collective effort to prevent the spread of coronavirus and reducing the risk to your fellow citizens.”

Face masks were to be available free of charge from Monday at all major train stations for a limited period to help people get used to the measures.
