Scarlet performs to world at Pride

- DOUGLAS DICKIE

A drag queen performed to people across the entire world when she represented Perthshire at Global Pride.

Scarlet Skylar Rae joined artists such as Mel C, Adam Lambert, Ke$ha, Stephen Fry, Olivia Newton-John, Joe Biden, Nicola Sturgeon and many more as part of the live broadcast.

Her performance on June 27 was held on the anniversary of the Stonewall riots.

In what was the world’s biggest ever LGBTI+ celebration through streaming, a live 24 hour festival with content from Pride organisations, activists, civil society groups, politicians and world leaders was broadcast to millions worldwide.

Scarlet, along with her piano player, ‘Le Ben’ followed a Nicola Sturgeon speech with an acoustic performance of Scarlet’s new song ‘Pride comes before the fall’.

The chilled out and emotional song was written by Scarlet when she first came out.

Scarlet told the PA after her performance: “It was incredible to represent Perthshire Pride on the global stage and have this opportunity to perform alongside so many incredible people.

“I’d have to say a massive thank you to the very talented ‘Le Ben’ whose lovely piano performance really helped make my song ‘Pride Comes before the fall’ be the best it could be.

“The event went so well and it was fab to see so much footage of Perthshire Pride too.

“It was actually quite emotional to perform in front of a global audience and hear so many stories from inspirational LGBTI+ groups around the world. What Global Pride has done is truly amazing in bringing the community together.

“It was so amazing to be introduced by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon too.”

Scarlet has become a local celebrity in the past 12 months.

She enjoyed a main stage performance at West Australian Pride, launched Perth’s firstever LGBTQ club night ‘Perth Wind and Fire,’ was crowned the ‘Drag Queen Dean of Robert Gordon University’ in Aberdeen as part of Grampian Pride, and headlined Hebridean Pride in Stornoway.

Scarlet is also currently a board member of Perthshire Pride Scotland and performed, hosted and introduced the film star and theatre actor, Sir Ian McKellen to the event this year.

Donatien von Rohland, Perthshire Pride secretary, said: “We are really proud of Scarlet who has been with us since the beginning.

“Her performance was sensational as always and it was great to see Perthshire Pride represented amongst so many other Pride Festivals at Global Pride.

“We would like to thank Global Pride for featuring us and for putting together such an impressive festival and line-up.

“We all really enjoyed watching the festival and hearing so many incredible speakers and artists perform.”

Global Pride 2020 was launched on April 1 as a partnership between InterPride, the European Pride Organisers Association, and national Pride networks in several countries.
