Scone pals step up to support school

- DOUGLAS DICKIE

A group of Perthshire primary pupils are taking steps to help their school through lockdown - one million of them.

The fab five at Robert Douglas Memorial have taken on the mammoth challenge of clocking up one million steps in just 10 days to raise money for the parent council.

Last Thursday Orla Hood and Brodie Hood, Findlay and Cameron Cowie and Mollie Ogilvie started their quest with the aim of completing it this Saturday.

They are well on their way to finishing and have so far raised an impressive £600 for the parent council.

Parent Gaynor Hood says the cash has come at a vital time for the school with funds stretched due to the coronavirus pandemic.

She said: “I am on the parent council so I know how much money it needs to support the school during the year.

“Since March we obviously haven’t been able to do any fundraising but in that time we have spent money on things like the Scone phone box being turned into a give-and-take box and given the school money to help with things like stationery.

“The parent council buys quite a bit for the school, from things like iPads to stuff for the outdoor classroom.

“Having spoken to the headteacher, every child is going to need things like their own stationery. They won’t be able to bring their own and that will use up a huge amount of the budget.”

The kids are walking through the Highfield Woods and through the village to reach their target.

Gaynor hopes it will encourage other children to support their parent councils throughout the region.

And she said the kids are enjoying it, even in the rain.

“One day it was just pouring down,” she said. “But they still managed to get 12,000 steps.

“Thankfully it wasn’t my day to take them.

“We’re just a group of neighbours and the children are all the same age so this is combining a bit of fun and exercise. They are enjoying it.

“There isn’t much else for them to do at the moment.

“Two of the boys are very competitive so that is really helping.”
